SKLZ is proud to support the Challenged Athletes Foundation and it's mission of helping people with physical challenges get involved, and stay involved, in sports. As we embark on the final weeks leading up to the Million Dollar Challenge, SKLZ will be featuring a CAF athlete of the week. Meet this week's athlete Gil Magallanes.
A 21 year United States Army veteran, Master Sergeant Gil Magallanes Jr. served in the Gulf War and the Afghanistan war. In December of 2001, a 2000 pound bomb dropped on Gil's team as they guarded the President of Afghanistan. Gil sustained an open traumatic brain injury with partial loss of his skull and brain matter, neck and back fractures and multiple organ traumas. He was left with permanent brain damage, cognitive, seizure and migraine disorders, vision impairment, severed nerves and two lost fingers on his left hand.
Gil endured multiple surgeries and lengthy hospitalizations to rehabilitate. After a lot of motivation and determination, Gil overcome the severity of his injuries and found himself back in competition with the help of the Challenged Athletes Foundation®. In June, 2008, Gil began pursuing his passion for archery and took up javelin and triathlon. Gil won a gold medal in javelin at the State Games of the West in Colorado, and completed the Silverman Half-Distance Triathlon relay, the Augusta Ironman relay, and the 1.2 mile swim legs of the 2008 and 2009 SDTC. Last year Gil completed CAF's Million Dollar Challenge with another military member, Chris Self, as the first military tandem team to attempt the Challenge. This year he will take on the 620-mile challenge once again.
